The Land of Stories:
Worlds Collide
Only Chris Colfer fans will understand what I felt when the last in the series of ‘The Land of Stories’ was released for sale. I made sure to get my copy as soon as it was available because I had to read and experience the culmination of the epic drama. The Land of Stories: Worlds Collide was an amazing conclusion because it wrapped up The Land of Stories series very beautifully.
The genre of this book is adventure fantasy and it has the least number of pages in the whole series with around 430 pages. It is written by Chris Colfer and was first published in the year 2017 by Little, Brown Books for Young Readers.
Chris Colfer is an American actor, singer, and author. He wrote, starred in his first film ‘Struck by Lightning’ and also wrote a series of Young Adult books, starting with ‘The land of stories: The wishing spell’. As of September 2019, he has published fifteen books.
All through the book, Colfer brough to life the characters we know and love instead of focusing just on the twins, Alex and Conner Bailey which I found to be quite interesting and satisfying. Besides the twins who are the protagonists we have Mother Goose, Jack, Goldilocks, Red, Froggy, Bree and Emmerich, the twins’ companions, Auburn Sally and her crew, the Ziblings, the Galaxy Queen and her soldiers, Beau Rogers and some mummies, charaters from Conner’s short stories. There is also Peter Pan and the Lost Boys, the Merry Men, the Tin Woodman, Merlin and Arthur, characters from classic literature, Morina the witch, the Queen of hearts, Wicked witch of the West and Captain Hook, the antagonists.
‘Worlds Collide’ is probably my favourite book in ‘The Land of Stories’ series, because Colfer brings together so many amazing characters in one final battle, and he does it so well. The main plot of the book is that the worlds have collided and the portal is open. The Fairy Tale villains have moved into the Otherworld to one of the biggest cities in the world, New York. Conners and his friends have no choice but to follow them to face the Army. But the situation gets worse when Alex is missing. Colfer writes with so much passion and emotion that you can’t help but get carried away. I was totally cheering for Conner et al to win against The Literary Army, The Witches and all the evil in the book.
Will the twins save the worlds before they get destroyed by the Literary Army?
The book was extremely delightful and I believe it is the best one in the series. Everything was described so vividly, the action parts were very good and I liked all the characters. But I think that Alex should have a little more important role and the story would have been better if the Masked Man was alive. My favourite part was when the twins go into a story where their dad is alive. My favourite character is Conner because he is funny, brave and creative, all the qualities that I appreciate.
It felt like all the loose ends have come together and the story has an open ending, leaving us wondering as to what might happen next. I strongly recommend this book as it is funny, suspenseful and has some great messages. For the first time the subject of homosexuality has been touched upon in this series. It was refreshing to read a story that included representation from different communities, not just straight white people.
I recommend this book for readers of ages 9-13.
